[ COCONUTS: recycle. reuse. ]

I’m all about reusing, recycling and minimising waste wherever possible. Combine this with everybody’s love of coconuts and we’re onto something! Coconut bowls seem to be all over social media lately, and why not, they look awesome! Cue DIY project…

STEP ONE: DRINK THE GOODS

If your coconut is already In the ‘round de-husked’ stage, you’ll see three eyes kind of like a bowling ball, the top hole will be the soft spot. Poke it out with something sharp and you’ll be able to drain your coconut straight into a cup!

 

 

STEP TWO: GET A HAMMER AND SMASH OFF THE TOP OF THE COCONUT

Okay this step is more ass than class (and the hardest seeing I have zero skill for coconut opening). If you have a machete, cut off the top of your coconut, otherwise, start smashing (with care)

STEP THREE: HOLLOW OUT THE COCONUT

Using a spoon, scrape out the coconut meat, either eat it straight up or put it in the oven to create some dehydrated coconut strips.

 

STEP FOUR: DE-HUSK YOUR COCONUT

If you have bought your coconut husk free (so it already looks round with a ‘fury’ brown appearance) you can skip this step, otherwise pull away!

STEP FIVE: DRY OUT THE COCONUT

I put it into the oven at about 210 degrees celcius for over 2 hours, just keep an eye on it!

STEP SIX: SAND OUT THE SHELL

This part takes time! Sand it to make it as smooth as you like, If your using your coconut for food you are going to want it to be 100% husk free with a silky smooth finish.

I stopped here, but just like the final step, you can go that little bit further if you want to use your coconut shell for food by waterproofing your shell with a natural lacquer.
